Deadlines Approaching for Storm Assistance Programs in Southwest Florida

Several key deadlines are fast approaching for assistance programs available to those still recovering from recent hurricanes in Southwest Florida. Here’s what residents need to know to ensure they receive the help they need.

FEMA Assistance for Hurricane Debby Damage Residents of Sarasota County who sustained losses from Hurricane Debby have until Tuesday, Nov. 12, to apply for federal disaster assistance. Homeowners and renters may qualify for financial aid covering displacement costs, essential home repairs, personal property losses, and other disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance.

To apply, visit FEMA’s website, use the FEMA mobile app, or call the toll-free number at 800-621-3362. For ongoing updates on Florida’s recovery efforts, follow FEMA on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook.

For those impacted by other storms, the deadlines vary. Applications for assistance related to Hurricane Helene are due by Nov. 27, while the Hurricane Milton deadline is Dec. 11.

Operation Blue Roof Program Extended The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended the sign-up period for the Operation Blue Roof program to Nov. 14. This program provides free fiber-reinforced sheeting to temporarily cover damaged roofs, allowing homeowners more time to arrange for permanent repairs. Those affected by Hurricane Milton can sign up online or by calling 888-ROOF-BLU (888-766-3258).

Disaster Recovery Center Open in Sarasota The Disaster Recovery Center at the Sarasota Municipal Auditorium (801 N. Tamiami Trail) remains open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The site previously located at Sarasota Christian Church is now closed.

For details on available resources and recovery support, residents can visit the Sarasota County website or call 311.
