A bicyclist was seriously injured in a crash with an SUV on Tuesday morning near Venice. According to the FHP, 76-year old James Madaus, of Venice was riding a bicycle south in the right lane of Jacaranda Boulevard south of Hatchett Creek Road at about 8:40 a.m. when he tried to cross the southbound lanes, directly into the path of a Jeep. The driver of that Jeep, another Venice man, tried to swerve and avoid Madaus, but skidded into him. The elderly man was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. No charges have been filed.
