CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — A fatal collision in Charlotte County has left a 73-year-old man from Venice dead and a 72-year-old woman hospitalized, Florida Highway Patrol troopers reported.

The incident unfolded just before 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of El Jobean Road (State Road 776) and Biscayne Drive near Port Charlotte.

According to authorities, the 73-year-old man was operating a sedan, heading south on Biscayne Drive, while simultaneously, a pickup truck driven by a 47-year-old Port Charlotte resident was traveling west on State Road 776 in the left lane.

Initial investigations reveal that the Venice man attempted a left turn onto eastbound El Jobean Road, crossing directly into the path of the oncoming pickup truck. Subsequently, the front of the pickup truck collided with the driver’s side of the sedan.

Following the impact, the sedan veered off the roadway, striking a traffic sign in the median of State Road 776.

Both the driver and passenger of the pickup truck reportedly sustained minor injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
