COVID-19 cases hit a one-day record high Thursday as health officials reported 3,207 new cases over the previous 24-hour period.

This week Florida set a record for a one-day spike in new cases with the previous record of 2,783 cases set on Tuesday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has blamed the increase largely on increased testing of people who are asymptomatic. He told reporters earlier this week he had no plans to roll back the state’s reopening.

The total number of cases in Florida reached 85,926 as of Thursday, up from 82,719 cases over the previous 24-hour period. Health officials also reported 1,758 new cases on Monday and more than 2,000 new cases on both Saturday and Sunday following a string of 1,000-plus case days.

Eighteen Florida counties reported 43 new deaths Thursday over the previous 24-hour period. That compares to 25 new deaths Wednesday, 55 new deaths on Tuesday, eight new deaths Monday, six new deaths Sunday, 48 new deaths Saturday, 30 news deaths Friday and 47 new deaths Thursday.
