Hayden Panettiere died on August 16 at age 36 in Greenville, South Carolina, and the Greenville County Coroner’s Office has ruled it an accidental overdose. A newly obtained coroner’s report says she had been released from a Malibu drug rehabilitation facility only weeks before her death. Her system contained fentanyl, alprazolam, a muscle relaxer, and a depression medication.
Investigators found blue pressed pills and a straw that later tested positive for fentanyl inside the apartment, along with a white powder in her suitcase. Her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother Zach were present when she was found. Panettiere had planned to spend her birthday in Greenville and then travel to Ukraine to see her daughter. In her May memoir, she wrote about lifelong scars from early fame, alcohol addiction, and postpartum depression, saying at one point, “I was drowning.”
For families here on the Suncoast, the practical takeaway is the pills themselves. Counterfeit pressed pills are manufactured to look identical to legitimate prescriptions, and a single one can be fatal. Relapse risk is also highest in the weeks right after treatment ends, which is exactly when support systems often thin out. The family’s publicist says the investigation is ongoing and the case is complex.
