Anthony Green, 25, is back in custody after a year on the run, and the story of how he got out is raising hard questions about jail procedures in Shelby County, Tennessee. Green was convicted in a 2020 murder case in September 2025 after a three-day trial. But before the clerk’s office paperwork reached the jail, he posted a $2,500 bond in an unrelated misdemeanor theft case and was released.
On Wednesday, deputies and U.S. Marshals acting on tips arrested Green around 1:25 p.m. in the 3300 block of Knights Trail in Memphis. He was taken into custody without incident and now faces first-degree murder and related firearm charges. The capture closes a year-long gap that began with a processing failure, not a courtroom decision.
For communities everywhere, including here on the Suncoast, the case is a reminder of how much public safety depends on the unglamorous work behind the scenes. What do you think should change about how jails confirm convictions before releasing anyone?
