Congress is back in Washington this week for the first time since July, but it’s a brief stay. Both chambers are in session together, and for the House, this is the final week before the midterms. Speaker Mike Johnson canceled the remaining two weeks of the House calendar, so representatives will take up a Russia sanctions bill named after the late Sen. Lindsey Graham and then head home. The Senate stays in session for another three weeks.
Wednesday is the day to circle. President Trump travels to North Carolina to campaign for Republican Senate nominee Michael Whatley, a clear signal the midterm sprint has begun with less than two months to go. The same day, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce a possible interest rate hike. For Suncoast residents on fixed incomes, or anyone watching savings rates and mortgage costs, that decision could matter more than anything Congress votes on this week.
This is the last real legislative window before November, and it’s a short one. After this week, campaign season takes over completely. We’ll be following the Fed announcement Wednesday and what it means for households here in Sarasota, Bradenton, and the surrounding communities.
