A week ago a decision was made to not move the statue in Bradenton, but to simply cover it for the time being. That decision was changed a few days ago and instead the statue was going to be taken to another location. Manatee County crews were sent to remove its controversial confederate statue early Thursday. That was the first mistake, it appears. The removal of the statue started around 3:30am and before the crews knew what happened, the statue had fallen and broke into two pieces. The statue had become brittle and that may have caused the issue in the first place. Demonstrators on both sides are speaking out. Some are saying they are glad the statue is gone and, better yet broken. Others are saddened that a historical monument is gone, at least for the foreseeable future. The county has spent nearly $13,000 removing the statue. It will be held at an undisclosed location until the next step is decided on.
