Colorado Officers Save Choking Infant Days After CPR Recertification

Two Buena Vista, Colorado police officers found themselves in the right place at the right time on the night of Sept. 27. Sgt. Frazer Pomfret and Officer Anitta Wroten responded to a call about an infant choking and not breathing, arriving first on scene and providing lifesaving aid until paramedics took over. The infant’s outcome hinged on those first critical minutes, and the officers were ready for them.

What makes this story stand out is the timing. Just days before the call, officers with the Buena Vista Police Department had completed their CPR and first-aid recertification. The department shared video of the response on Facebook, noting that maintaining these skills is something they take seriously. “The following video highlights this reality,” the post read, a rare look at a successful rescue that usually happens out of public view.

For Suncoast residents, the takeaway reaches beyond Colorado. CPR and first-aid classes are offered regularly through local organizations, and the skills apply anywhere: the beach, the backyard, a restaurant on Main Street. A few hours of training can turn any bystander into the first link in the chain of survival. Have you taken a CPR class recently, and if not, what’s holding you back?
