Cold weather shelters opened last night across Sarasota County as temps fell into the 40s overnight.

The Salvation Army on 10th street in Sarasota took in around 100 or so people last night. The New Hope Community Church in North Port also opened as a cold weather shelter last night.

Local residents and good samaritans were seen handing out blankets and cold-weather gear to the homeless yesterday.

Overnight lows aren’t expected to be back in the 40s again until next week.
