A 32-year-old murder case finally has a suspect behind bars. Randall Joseph Gall, 66, was arrested Tuesday in Gaston, Oregon, and charged with second-degree murder in the death of his neighbor, Veta Hardebeck. The 85-year-old woman was found dead outside her home on February 16, 1994. Her daughter, Caroline Ledbury, always believed her mother was killed, not that she fell, and she suspected a relative was involved.
The case sat unsolved for decades until a $14,000 grant from the Oregon Cold Case Investigators Association allowed investigators to take a fresh look at the evidence. That renewed effort led to a grand jury indictment and Gall’s arrest. He is now being held without bail. Ledbury described finding her mother with her arms folded and wood piled on top of her, as if someone tried to stage the scene to look like an accident.
This arrest is a reminder that cold cases can still be solved. It took more than three decades, but Hardebeck’s family finally has the closure they waited so long for.
