There could end up being a tax referendum on the ballot in Charlotte County next year.

The school board is currently discussing a proposed property tax hike that would raise taxes by $1.00 per $1,000 of property value. For example, a house worth $100,000 would see a property tax increase of $100.

Officials say declining enrollment is the main reason for a lack of funding, as more retirees- instead of families- are moving into Charlotte County. The district is still running with a deficit despite cutting its budget by 15 percent this year. The school board will vote on the proposal next month. If it’s approved, it’ll be on the November 2018 ballot.
