Charlotte County Man Killed in Deputy-Involved Shooting

A Charlotte County man was shot and killed by deputies in his driveway shortly after noon on Wednesday, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. The incident began when the man, identified as Elroy Clarke, called 911 to have someone removed from his property. However, when deputies arrived, they discovered Clarke had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

The Sheriff’s Office reported that Clarke resisted arrest and eventually charged at the deputies. Despite numerous attempts to subdue him using non-lethal measures, including a taser, baton, and pepper spray, Clarke continued to resist. Deputies said that three officers had to go “hands-on” with him during the confrontation.

Sheriff Bill Prummel confirmed that two deputies fired their weapons during the encounter, resulting in Clarke’s death. The Sheriff’s Office stated that bodycam footage from the incident will be released after an official review.

The individual involved in the initial disturbance, Troy Johnson, is currently in custody as of Wednesday night. The two deputies who discharged their firearms have been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
