Hurricane Matthew caused Charlotte County officials to declare a state of emergency not because of anticipated damage, but to help those on the east coast who will take a direct hit from the category 4 storm.
Nevertheless officials are warning residents to be prepared for heavy rain, strong winds and higher tides that could cause beach erosion and property damage.
Charlotte County schools officials say they expect classes to be held as scheduled tomorrow.
