A Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputy has resigned amid allegations he had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old nearly 20 years ago.
Earlier this summer, a woman told the sheriff’s office her friend had a relationship with Deputy Ruben Gonzales back in 2001 when she was 16 and he was 30. The woman said the two had consensual sex when he was on duty, in uniform and in his patrol vehicle.
Gonzales told his superiors he didn’t know why he was being questioned since the two had been in a 12-year-long relationship, married for two years and have kids together.
