Water managers say the Caloosahatchee River has filled as much as it has in decades.
Researchers say if a tropical storm blew in before the end of the year, then this year would set a record for the volume of water flowing down the river.
The large quantity of fresh water flowing into the tidal estuary has already harmed sea grasses and oysters in the Sanibel-Captiva area that rely on salt water.
