Alaska Fish and Game biologists euthanized an adult male brown bear Monday night in Anchorage’s Rabbit Creek neighborhood after a series of reports that a bear was breaking into garages, damaging vehicles, and trying to push open a home’s front door. The bear matched a description captured in a homeowner’s video. Officials say it’s still unclear whether this was the same bear behind all the reported damage.
That uncertainty comes down to timing and territory. At least one additional brown bear has been seen in the same area since the euthanization, and drones sent up to search for it came back without a find. Regional supervisor Cyndi Wardlow said the agency can’t confirm the killed bear was responsible for every garage and vehicle complaint, noting plainly that another brown bear is still in the neighborhood.
Biologists believe the pattern points to food conditioning.
