If you’ve been wondering where the Suncoast’s cultural heartbeat lives, the Hermitage Artist Retreat just handed you the answer—and it comes with a lobster feast and Tony Award winners.

The Hermitage has officially locked in dates for two marquee fundraising events that have become essential dates on the region’s arts calendar: the 18th annual Hermitage Artful Lobster on Saturday, November 7, 2026, and the 19th annual Hermitage Greenfield Prize Dinner on Sunday, April 18, 2027. For anyone who thinks world-class theater, music, and visual art happen somewhere else, these events prove otherwise. They’re happening right here on Manasota Key and in Sarasota—and they’re drawing talent that regularly graces Broadway stages and concert halls across the country.

The Artful Lobster, held under a tent overlooking the Gulf of Mexico at the Hermitage’s campus on Manasota Key, is the anti-gala. Starting at 11:30 a.m. and running through 2 p.m., it blends live performances from celebrated Hermitage Fellows with a signature lobster feast prepared by Michael’s On East. Past lineups have featured Tony Award-nominated Broadway performer Betsy Wolfe, Grammy-nominated composer Rona Siddiqui, violin virtuoso Daniel Bernard Roumain, and the acclaimed string quartet ETHEL. This isn’t background music during cocktails—it’s genuine artistic experience in a relaxed coastal setting. Last year’s event raised over $450,000, a testament to both the community’s appetite for quality arts programming and the Hermitage’s reputation as one of the nation’s leading incubators for new artistic work.

The April gala celebrates the announcement of that year’s Hermitage Greenfield Prize winner—a $35,000 commission that rotates annually among theater, music, and visual art. In 2027, the prize honors excellence in theater. Past recipients read like a who’s who of contemporary American arts: playwrights Martyna Majok, Nilo Cruz, and Aleshea Harris; choreographer Rennie Harris; composer Vijay Iyer; and visual artist Sanford Biggers. The award comes with serious cultural muscle: the commissioned work receives its first public presentation in Sarasota during spring 2029, further solidifying the region’s profile as a destination for contemporary artistic development.

What makes the Hermitage uniquely valuable to the Suncoast isn’t just the star power at the galas—it’s the year-round commitment to community engagement. Hermitage Fellows participate in free public programs across the region: live performances, artist conversations, open studios, and educational workshops. Thousands of residents and visitors access works still in development before they hit major stages, galleries, and museums nationwide. That kind of access to the creative process is rare and irreplaceable.

If you’re serious about supporting the arts on Florida’s Gulf Coast, sponsorship opportunities range from $1,500 to $10,000 for the Artful Lobster and $2,000 to $10,000 for the Greenfield Prize Dinner.
