October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and for Suncoast residents the most valuable thing to come out of it isn’t a ribbon. It’s a phone number and a plan. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends mammograms every two years for women ages 40 through 74, though other major medical groups take different positions on when to start and how often to go. Because age, family history, and personal risk all shift the math, your best move is a conversation with your provider about what fits you specifically.
The good news is that getting screened here is simpler than a lot of people assume. Sarasota Memorial schedules screening mammograms at 941-917-7322, and patients 40 and older can book without a physician’s order first. If cost has been the holdup, the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program offers free or low-cost screening to residents of Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte, and DeSoto counties, with the Sarasota region line at 941-861-2676. Susan G. Komen adds one-time $400 grants to help with living expenses during treatment, plus a Breast Care Helpline at 1-877-465-6636 staffed in English and Spanish.
One caution worth repeating: screening is for people without symptoms. If you notice a new lump, a change in the nipple, or dimpling of the skin, that needs prompt evaluation from a doctor, even if your most recent mammogram was normal. So, be honest with us. Has something been sitting on your to-do list longer than you’d like to admit?
