A No Swim advisory remains in effect for Sarasota County’s Bird Key Park after tests yesterday showed a specific bacteria higher than acceptable limits.
The enterococcus bacteria can come from a variety of natural and human-made sources, including pet waste, livestock, and storm-water runoff. County health officials say a combination of decaying algae, heavy rains washing animal feces into local waters and other natural sources are responsible.
A new test is scheduled for today, but the beach remains closed until further notice.
