More than 1,000 complaints have been called in to Charlotte County Mosquito Control over the past week. Charlotte County Mosquito Control Manager Scott Schermerhorn told ABC-7 this year appears to be a record-breaker for salt marsh mosquitoes. He said every time his crews have gone out to spray, they either get rained out or have high winds and thunderstorms. In addition, the high tides are just adding to the breeding ground for the mosquitoes. Yet another issue- because the salt marshes are state-protected land, mosquito control needs to get the OK from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection before they can even spray.
