More than 200 people picked up tons of trash off seven Sarasota County beaches Wednesday morning. Keep Sarasota County Beautiful said 170 volunteers had pre-registered to help clean up, and some Siesta Key businesses organized their own volunteer groups. The post-Independence Day, annual ‘Liberty Litter Cleanup’ kicked off at 6 a.m. Less than three hours later, Siesta Key Beach was cleaned up and trash free. The volunteers got help from beachgoers this time around, though. Officials handed out thousands of trash bags so beachgoers could clean up after themselves. In all, the county estimated more than 160 tons of litter and waste were taken off the beach over the long weekend.
