In a stunning turn of events, an ordinary scuba diving trip took a dangerous twist for Tony Rivera and Brianna Rutledge from Arcadia. While diving several miles off Boca Grande, the couple found their boat had drifted away, leaving them stranded in the Gulf for more than six hours. Conditions worsened with strong winds and waves—talk about a recipe for panic!
As they floated, they wisely conserved energy, alternating positions and using their scuba gear to stay afloat. When the sun began to set, they huddled around a crab trap buoy, feeling the weight of uncertainty pressing down on them. Rivera managed to use a dive light to signal for help, and after several anxious hours, their SOS signal was spotted by rescue crews from Charlotte County Fire & EMS.
Fortunately, the couple was located and brought back to safety, although they declined hospital transport. They expressed immense gratitude for their survival, and it’s a stark reminder of the importance of preparation on water adventures. So next time you head out for a day of diving, remember to update your checklist—and maybe pack an extra lifejacket or two!
