The charm of Manasota Key is being put to the test as local residents stand firm against the proposed expansion of the Manasota Key Resort. Just north of Stump Pass Beach State Park, plans to develop 246 resort units, along with bars and restaurants, have ignited concerns among neighbors. Many fear that this project could disrupt the serene small-town feel of the community and have an adverse impact on local wildlife.

This protest came to life last Saturday, with residents passionately waving signs at Englewood Beach, expressing their worries about increased traffic, pollution, and the environmental impact on the nesting turtles along the shoreline. What’s more, the endangered Kemp’s Ridley turtle’s presence adds a layer of urgency and heart to their fight. Protest organizer Karen Dega Martin and others are preparing to make their voices heard at the Charlotte County Planning and Zoning Board meeting on May 11.

As developers eye new projects, it’s clear that locals are more than just residents; they’re passionate caretakers of their piece of paradise. Let’s just hope that development doesn’t come to mean “destruction” in this enchanting coastal gem.
