In a showdown that’s caught the attention of many, condo owners and conservationists in Cape Haze are teaming up against plans for a new housing development proposed by California-based Hutton. With a site that’s already approved for 108 units, the developer wants to add 27 more, right next to Don Pedro Island State Park. But this is no ordinary expansion; it’s sparking major concerns over traffic and environmental impact.
Residents attending a recent Charlotte County Planning and Zoning Board meeting voiced their fears, with Rosie Buccine, a key figure in the movement, declaring that the added infrastructure could overwhelm the community. Marine biologist Rob Robbins has also stepped in, pointing out that much of the proposed site sits on wetlands, a vital habitat that’s often overlooked. Even though the planning board approved the developer’s request in a 4-1 vote, the road to more development is paved with opposition, as this fight is far from over.
With the Charlotte County Commissioners set to make a final decision on March 25, the tension is building. Who knows, this might just be the plot twist we needed in a community sticking up for what’s precious. So, grab your popcorn—this battle over the ecosystem could definitely use a dramatic soundtrack!
