North Port Voters to Decide on $115M Bond for New Police Headquarters
North Port, FL – As the City of North Port continues to grow, so does the need for enhanced public safety infrastructure. On an upcoming ballot, on May 13th, residents will have the opportunity to vote on a proposal to fund a new, modern police department headquarters through General Obligation Bonds.
The current facility, constructed in 2006, was designed to serve a population of around 47,000. With North Port’s population significantly higher today—and projected to keep climbing—a professional study recently confirmed that the existing headquarters no longer meets the department’s staffing and operational needs. The study evaluated future growth, staffing projections, and national standards to recommend the construction of a new facility.
A “Yes” vote on the ballot measure would authorize the City to issue up to $115 million in bonds to finance the new headquarters. For the average homeowner with a property assessed at $246,400, the cost would be approximately $121.38 in the first year—about $10 per month, or 33 cents per day. Officials note that this cost is expected to decrease over time as it is shared among a growing number of residents.
City leaders emphasize that the investment is necessary to ensure the North Port Police Department can continue to effectively and safely protect the community now and in the future.
