Lee County Approves New Parking Rules for Boca Grande in Effort to Balance Growth and Beach Access
Lee County Commissioners have unanimously approved a revised parking ordinance for Boca Grande, adopting new measures aimed at managing growth while maintaining public access to the island’s beaches.
The newly passed Gasparilla Island Parking Ordinance includes several amendments, most notably extending the downtown parking time limit from two to three hours. Because all amendments remained within the scope of the originally advertised plan, the measure moved forward without the need for re-advertising or delay.
Supporters view the ordinance as a step toward responsible development that protects both the community and the environment. They believe the changes help preserve the island’s unique character while still ensuring beach access for visitors and residents alike.
Opponents have voiced concerns about reduced access to public beaches, potential harm to local tourism, and the risk of losing millions in federal beach renourishment funding. Others raised issues about fairness and the potential for limiting access based on income, pointing to the island’s complex social history.
In response to these concerns, county commissioners agreed to explore additional actions, such as evaluating a pay-to-park system and reviewing how reduced parking might impact tax revenues on Gasparilla Island.
Although the ordinance passed without opposition, commissioners emphasized that it could still be revised if needed to address evolving community needs.
The decision represents a significant effort by Lee County to manage development, preserve the environment, and ensure fair beach access on one of Florida’s most iconic barrier islands.
