Charlotte County Fire & EMS Adds Sensory Assistance Bags to Better Serve Patients
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Aug. 20, 2025) — Charlotte County Fire & EMS has rolled out new EMS Patient Sensory Assistance Bags to help patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder and others with sensory sensitivities feel more comfortable during medical emergencies.
The bags are part of a partnership with the Southwest Florida Healthcare Coalition, Golisano Children’s Hospital, the SEA STAR Program, and Charlotte County Fire & EMS.
Each bag is stocked with tools to reduce stress and support communication, including:
Noise-canceling headphones to block loud sounds
Sunglasses to ease light sensitivity
Fidget toys, pop-its, and tactile brushes for comfort and distraction
Chew rings for oral sensory needs
A communication board to assist non-verbal patients
The sensory bags are now available at all Charlotte County Fire & EMS stations and have been placed on every ALS ambulance. Crews can use them at their discretion when a patient may benefit from additional sensory support.
Officials say the program highlights a growing focus on inclusive, patient-centered care.
