Agape Flights Mobilizes Relief Effort for Hurricane Melissa Victims
VENICE, Fla. – As Hurricane Melissa leaves devastation across parts of the Caribbean, Agape Flights, based at the Venice Municipal Airport, is springing into action to deliver desperately needed supplies to those impacted.
The local nonprofit, which provides weekly missionary support flights from Venice to Caribbean nations, has shifted into disaster response mode. Crews are preparing aircraft loaded with food, generators, hygiene kits, tarps, and other emergency supplies for delivery to Jamaica and neighboring islands once flight conditions allow.
“Being positioned in Southwest Florida gives us a unique ability to respond quickly when storms like Melissa hit,” Agape officials said. “We already have trusted partners in the Caribbean who help us get aid directly to communities in need.”
Agape Flights is coordinating with relief organizations including Mercy Chefs and Sea Hope Partners to transport food and medical supplies to the hardest-hit areas. The organization is monitoring airport damage and weather updates to determine the first safe departure window.
Locally, volunteers are working around the clock at Agape’s Venice hangar to sort and stage cargo. Donations of funds, generators, hygiene products, and nonperishable food are being accepted to help sustain the missions.
