SOUTH VENICE – The man suspected in a Monday afternoon shooting has been apprehended overnight, according to a social media post by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
Kevin Johnson, who had previously lived in the 5000 block of Olivia Road, is accused of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.
After the shooting, Sarasota County authorities swarmed the area of the home along Olivia Road in South Venice on Monday afternoon. Despite the quick response, Johnson had fled the scene before deputies arrived.
The SWAT team raided the home Monday evening, but Johnson was not located. The suspect was, at one point, confirmed to have been at the residence at 5701 Olivia Road. He is accused of shooting a person who was transported to the hospital for treatment. The extent of the victim’s injuries has not yet been disclosed.
As of early Tuesday, additional details on Johnson’s apprehension were not available on the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office jail website.
By 3:40 p.m., the Sheriff’s Office had confirmed the shooting on social media, urging people to stay away from the 5000 block of Olivia Road.
Deputies deployed a modified Bearcat armored vehicle to provide protection for law enforcement personnel. By 4:20 p.m., officers were seen in nearby Challenger Park, and a Sheriff’s Office drone was deployed overhead to assist in the search.
At 4:45 p.m., SWAT team members in tactical gear initiated an entry into the home, deploying two flash bang devices before proceeding inside. A battering ram was affixed to the front of the Bearcat, a tool commonly used for forced entry in high-risk situations.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not yet released further information about Johnson’s capture. Community members are encouraged to report any additional information to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
