SARASOTA — A 12-year-old student was airlifted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg after being struck by her parent’s vehicle during the morning drop-off at Booker Middle School on the first day of classes.
According to Superintendent Terry Connor, the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. when the student stepped out of the car and bent down to pick up something in front of the vehicle, placing her out of the driver’s line of sight. The driver, a 30-year-old Sarasota woman, accidentally ran over her child, resulting in critical injuries.
The identities of both the driver and the student have not been released. The Florida Highway Patrol reported that the student was immediately airlifted for urgent medical care.
Superintendent Connor expressed his thoughts and prayers for the student and her family and emphasized the importance of vigilance and adherence to safety protocols during drop-offs.
As of noon Monday, there has been no further update on the student’s condition.
