Sarasota County is offering residents a convenient alternative to get rid of expired or unwanted prescriptions. If you can’t make it to a drop box, the Health Department in Sarasota County will give you -free of charge- a pouch called Deterra. Inside the pouch are smaller pouches filled with carbon. Health officials say all you have to do is drop the unwanted pills in, fill halfway with warm water, shake, and toss away. The water and carbon mix together to completely dissolve the pills and the liquid is then harmless. Sarasota County has given away 1500 pouches of Deterra in the last year. The bags are biodegradable and around 90 pills fit in each one.
