Eight people are under arrest after a check fraud investigation that reached at least 17 churches across Manatee County. Detectives have identified 107 stolen checks and more than $72,000 in losses here in the county, with 66 local victims connected to the scheme. The case began in December 2025, when a pastor at Harvest Methodist Church in Lakewood Ranch reported a noticeable drop in mail, and parishioners later discovered their checks had been deposited into another person’s bank account.
The reach extends well beyond Manatee. Outside the county, 268 stolen checks account for nearly $194,000 in confirmed losses, and seven additional suspects have active arrest warrants. One is confirmed in Cuba, and others are allegedly in Miami. The Manatee County Sheriff’s Office is working the case with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Hillsborough and Pasco sheriff’s offices.
If you still pay bills or make donations by mail, this is a good moment to take a closer look at your bank activity and follow up on any check that never cleared. Have you changed how you pay by mail in recent years, or are you still a check-in-the-envelope person?
