Baby Basics Fashion Show Brings Diapers and Books to 150 Suncoast Babies

Diapers are one of the quietest budget busters for working families, and on the Suncoast a volunteer group has been easing that burden since 2007. Baby Basics of Sarasota County provides free diapers, wipes, books and personal support to low-income working families who don’t receive government assistance. What began with five babies now serves more than 150 through distribution centers in Sarasota and Venice, giving diapers monthly for up to three years or until a child is potty trained, plus a book at every pickup.

The annual fashion show and luncheon keeps that work going. It’s Monday, November 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Sarasota Yacht Club, themed “Birds, Bees and Butterflies,” with fashions from St. Marco Boutique, a silent auction, raffles and ABC7’s Summer Smith as emcee. Tickets are $125 and available online through November 12 or until sold out.

Can’t attend? You can still help. Attendees are encouraged to bring a book for a baby, and donations and book drives support the group year-round. The nonprofit receives no government funding and runs entirely on volunteers and community generosity. So here’s our question: which children’s book would you want a Suncoast baby to grow up with? Tell us in the comments.
