Roads across DeSoto County are under water this week, and the sheriff’s office is urging drivers to turn around rather than cross flooded stretches. After 5 to 10 inches of rain fell on parts of west-central Florida, flood warnings remain in effect for rivers in DeSoto, Hardee, Manatee and Hillsborough counties.
The Peace River at Arcadia at State Road 70 was at 12.8 feet Tuesday morning, already past the 11-foot flood stage. Forecasters expect it to crest at 16.6 feet early Thursday afternoon, a level that could flood up to 60 homes at River Acres. Horse Creek near Arcadia is forecast to crest at 14.6 feet Wednesday morning.
With crests still a day or two away, conditions on local roads can change quickly. Avoid barricaded roads, check on neighbors in low-lying areas, and keep an eye on updated river forecasts through the week. Have you seen flooding in your neighborhood?
