A road rage incident near Tribune Boulevard and Tamiami Trail ended with gunfire and one arrest on October 26, 2026. Deputies say Stephan M. Clark became enraged when a red pickup intentionally blew thick black smoke in front of his white SUV. Instead of letting it go, detectives say Clark re-engaged the other driver and pulled a gun from his waistband.

The other driver, fearing for his safety, drew his own firearm and fired at Clark’s front tire to disable the vehicle and avoid hitting him. Deputies later found bullet holes and a flat tire on the SUV. Clark was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill. The other driver has not been charged, and the case is under review by the State Attorney’s Office.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell addressed the incident directly, saying if you are unable to control your emotions while driving, then you should stay off the roads. He also expressed frustration with irresponsible gun owners. It’s a stark reminder for anyone driving the Suncoast’s busy roads that patience can prevent a minor irritation from becoming a dangerous confrontation.
