A 24-year-old Logan County sheriff’s deputy was killed Saturday evening when a coal truck pulled off Rum Creek Road and struck his vehicle at Route 10. Deputy Caden Mullins and his fiancée had just come from a trunk-or-treat event in the Man area, and he was dropping her off before responding to an emergency call when the crash happened around 5 p.m. His fiancée was airlifted from the scene to a hospital; her condition was not reported.
Mullins had spent about a year with the Charleston Police Department before joining the Logan County Sheriff’s Department to be closer to family. Law enforcement agencies from several departments joined the community for his funeral service, a tribute to a young officer who chose to come home and serve the people he knew.
For the Suncoast and Gulf Coast communities, this story hits close to the way we live: small towns, rural routes, and first responders who are our neighbors and family members. The risks they take on every ordinary call, and the toll on the families who wait at home, are worth remembering long after the headlines move on. Keep Mullins’ family and his fiancée in your thoughts this week.
