A welfare check at a Middletown, Ohio home on September 29 ended with four children removed and two parents in the Butler County Jail. Melanie and Christopher Todd face four counts of child endangerment and several animal cruelty counts after police described the conditions inside their Cardinal Court residence as “deplorable and unlivable.” Investigators reported large holes in walls and floors, trash and animal feces throughout the home, and bedbug and cockroach infestations.

The case began at school. Staff at Middletown City Schools reported that two 10-year-olds showed up dirty and said they had no food to eat. According to investigators, the children also told officers that two cats were dead inside the house and that the holes in the walls came from punching during parental anger. All four children are now placed with family members, and pets including cats, fish, mice, gerbils, and tarantulas were removed from the home.

The couple’s arraignment is scheduled for Thursday. For families here on the Suncoast, the story is a reminder that Florida’s child abuse hotline takes reports 24 hours a day, and that teachers and school staff are often the first adults to see a child in crisis.
