Extreme adventurer Ash Dykes, known to more than 15 million TikTok followers for his record-breaking expeditions, went more than 16 hours without contact this week while attempting a world-first 700-kilometer journey down the Sangha River in the Congo Basin. The silence ended Wednesday when contact was restored and all team members were confirmed safe. The culprit wasn’t danger, it was hardware: the team’s Starlink unit and power bank both failed, leaving only a Garmin device capable of short messages when signal allows.
The expedition, part of Dykes’s six-mission “Project 6,” has already faced missing kayak pumps, denied visas that forced an overland route from Cameroon, and a sting from an unidentified insect. Dykes holds five world records, and this river run would add another first to the list if completed. His team’s updates had been flowing steadily until the equipment failure cut them off.
For those of us on the Suncoast, where a dropped call between Sarasota and Venice feels like an emergency, 16 hours of silence in the Congo Basin is hard to imagine. It’s a reminder that remote exploration still carries real risk, and that preparation, not followers, is what gets teams home. Have you ever been completely off the grid for a day or more? Tell us where.
