Street Race at 88 mph Kills Two North Dakota Teens: Both Drivers Had Recent Speeding Tickets

Two 19-year-olds appeared in a North Dakota courtroom Monday, accused of turning a city street into a racetrack. Police say Cameron Schestler and Sidney Seidel were racing westbound on Main Avenue West in Mandan on October 2 when Schestler’s Infiniti struck a Chevy Equinox turning onto Center Street at roughly 88 miles an hour. The crash killed passengers Taylor Fisher, 16, and Benjamin Moch, 17. The Equinox’s 15-year-old driver survived.

Schestler faces two manslaughter counts, reckless endangerment and aggravated reckless driving; bond was set at $100,000 cash. Seidel faces reckless endangerment, child neglect and reckless driving, with bond at $20,000 cash. Both were ordered to stay in Burleigh and Morton counties and have no contact with the victims’ families or the surviving driver.

What makes this story land harder is what prosecutors said in court: both drivers had recent high-speed citations in Bismarck, and Seidel’s came just one day before the crash. For Suncoast drivers, where summer traffic and snowbird season can test anyone’s patience, it’s a reminder that speed limits are not suggestions. What do you think it will take to finally get reckless drivers off the road?
