Alabama Man Charged With Elder Abuse and Kidnapping After Hours-Long Standoff

A family home in Cullman, Alabama became the center of an hours-long standoff on Friday. Police were called after Jonathan Patrick Young’s elderly father left the residence with injuries. Young remained inside the home, armed, with his mother, and refused to leave. Officials eventually removed his mother safely, and a police negotiator helped secure his surrender.

Young is now in custody facing charges of kidnapping, elder abuse, and making a terroristic threat. The standoff ended without reported further injury, thanks to the work of responding officers and the negotiator.

For Suncoast families, many of whom are caring for aging parents or keeping an eye on older neighbors, this story is a reminder that some of the most serious situations happen quietly inside homes we pass every day. Elder abuse rarely announces itself, and the warning signs can be easy to dismiss. Have you had the conversation with your family about how to look out for the older folks in your life?
