Amendment 3 promises homeowners a bigger homestead exemption on certain property taxes, and on the surface, that’s an easy sell. But Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells has put a number on what it costs his office: $23 million in year one, $50 million total by year two. That’s funding tied to deputies, contracts, and school resource officers, the people who show up when something goes wrong.
At a Manatee Chamber of Commerce forum, local leaders lined up with revenue concerns. Commissioner George Kruse pointed out that the amendment was written and proposed in three days with very little public input, and no implementation bill to go with it. His warning: once property taxes are cut, getting voters to approve restoring them is nearly impossible, no matter how the results play out.
Voters across Florida decide on Amendment 3 this November, including right here on the Suncoast. Whether you’re a retiree watching your tax bill, a snowbird with a condo, or a parent thinking about the officers in your kid’s school, the trade-off lands on you.
