A St. Louis County community is grieving after a 17-year-old high school senior was shot and killed on southbound I-170 last Wednesday. Alyssa Wilson, a student-athlete at McCluer North High School, was found shot inside a crashed car near Midland Boulevard. She was 60 days from her 18th birthday, and her father, Robert Hickman, says the family had planned a vacation to a Disney theme park. Surveillance video captured a white SUV pulling onto the shoulder, a man exiting, a single gunshot, and the vehicle driving away. Investigators used license plate readers to trace the SUV to a hotel in Caseyville, Illinois, where they arrested a husband and wife from Arlington, Texas, and recovered the gun. Willie Herndon, 42, faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges, while Taiya Herndon, 45, faces hindering prosecution.
Both are being held on cash-only bonds, $1 million for Willie Herndon and $500,000 for Taiya Herndon. St. Louis County Prosecutor Melissa Price-Smith called the shooting a senseless act and urged people to think before something like this happens again. Investigators say Willie Herndon provided details about his involvement and information about possible other investigations, meaning the case could grow in the months ahead.
For families here on the Suncoast and across the country, stories like this raise hard questions about random violence, highway safety, and how quickly a routine drive can turn tragic. The charges are only the beginning of a long legal process, but the human loss is already permanent. Wilson is remembered as a student-athlete with college plans and a close-knit family.
