A Georgia couple is asking for help after a split-second decision changed their lives. Dustin Low tried to break up a fight between his two family dogs and suffered severe facial injuries. His wife, Chelsea, remembers him coming downstairs and saying he needed help with the pets. One look told her it was a hospital situation, not a dog problem. She describes the whole thing as a freak accident that lasted only minutes.
Dustin has been through two major facial reconstructive surgeries and needs a third to remove the remaining forehead flap. Before that surgery can be scheduled, the couple must pay $12,310, and the final procedure will cost another $6,500. A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover the medical bills. Through all of it, the couple says they hold no anger toward the dogs and plan to keep them, calling it a mistake that the animals never intended.
For pet owners around the Suncoast, whether you’re walking the beach in Venice or have a house full of rescues in Bradenton, the story is a reminder of how fast a household scuffle can turn serious. It also raises bigger questions about the cost of reconstructive surgery and how families piece together care when insurance falls short.
