Manatee County Dual-Language Program Expands to Middle Schools Next Year

Manatee County students in the dual-language program will soon have a place to continue their bilingual education. The district is expanding the program from four elementary schools, Daughtrey, Braden River, Palmetto, and Prine, into middle school starting next school year.

The model splits each student’s day evenly. Half of their courses are taught in English, and the other half are taught in Spanish, so students learn actual subject matter in both languages rather than treating Spanish as a single class period. District officials say the early immersion approach works because younger students absorb language skills naturally, and the goal is for participants to read and write fluently in both languages by the time they reach high school.

The long-term vision doesn’t stop at middle school. Manatee County leaders want to extend the dual-language track all the way through high school, giving families a continuous bilingual pathway from kindergarten through graduation. For parents weighing middle school options, it’s a new choice worth asking about during registration season.
