Halloween shopping usually means crowded pop-up stores and costumes that fall apart before the last trick-or-treater rings the bell. But there’s a better option hiding in plain sight in Bradenton. The Manatee Performing Arts Center houses more than 30,000 costume pieces, collected over 75 years of stage productions, and the public can rent them.

Costume designer Caren Brady says rentals start around $40, and the collection isn’t just for Halloween. Weddings, galas, proms, and murder mystery parties all get outfits from this closet. The inventory includes corsets, heavy velvet, genuine armor, and vintage pieces that have dressed productions and schools across Florida for generations. Brady calls it a well-kept secret, and some clients go out of their way to keep it that way. One told her plainly: they weren’t sharing where they got their costume because they didn’t want friends showing up in something better.

For Suncoast residents, this is a short drive with a big payoff: unique outfits, reasonable prices, and support for local theater all in one stop. Whether you need a pirate for a boat party or a ballgown for a gala, it’s worth a look before you buy something off the rack. So what’s the one costume you’ve always wanted to wear?
