Sarasota Holiday Parade Turns 30 with America 250 Theme: Registration Closes Oct. 23

The Sarasota Holiday Parade is celebrating a milestone this December. The downtown Main Street tradition marks its 30th year on the first Saturday of the month, and this year’s theme is America 250, honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary while still recognizing Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and other seasonal celebrations. Between 15,000 and 20,000 people typically line the route for floats, performers, and local favorites like the Sarasota High School band and Nik Wallenda with The Circus Arts Conservatory.

If you want to be part of the action, time is running out. Registration opened Aug. 3 and closes Oct. 23, and participants are required to carry liability insurance. The city co-hosts the event with in-kind support but provides no direct funding, which means the parade relies on sponsors, volunteers, and community groups to keep it running year after year. Danny Bilyeu, president and director of Sarasota Holiday Celebration, and administrative volunteer Linda Gould both emphasize that this is a holiday parade, not just a Christmas one, and everyone is welcome to take part.

Founded by Paul Thorpe three decades ago, the parade paused during the COVID-19 pandemic and has come back as strong as ever. Whether you’re marching, sponsoring, volunteering, or just grabbing a spot on the curb, this is one of the Suncoast’s signature kickoffs to the season. Will you be watching from Main Street this December, or joining the lineup?
