A 13-year-old girl from Canby, Oregon is dead after a hit-and-run crash while she was riding an electric scooter last Wednesday. Quinn Broyles was taken to the hospital with critical injuries and did not survive. Police say the driver kept going. They later located the van and the suspected driver, 31-year-old Cody Churchwell, who was booked into Clackamas County Jail on charges including second-degree manslaughter, failure to perform the duties of a driver, reckless driving, and reckless endangering.
Canby Police Captain James Murphy said the death was the first e-scooter or e-bike fatality in the city this year. He added that it always hits hard when the victim is an innocent young person. Quinn’s family shared a statement through the police department remembering her as an aspirational young leader whose love, determination, and character left a lasting impression on the youth in their communities. The family has asked for privacy as the case moves through the courts.
