Former special counsel Jack Smith testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, delivering a defiant defense of his prosecutions of President Donald Trump over the 2020 election and classified documents. Smith rejected Republican claims that his work was partisan and said his fired team’s departure left the country less safe.
The hearing turned combative fast. GOP senators accused Smith of overreach, particularly over subpoenas for Republican lawmakers’ phone records, with Sen. John Kennedy telling him, “You’re the villain.” Smith responded that he would not be silenced by threats of prosecution. Democrats on the committee accused Republicans of peddling conspiracy theories to whitewash Trump’s conduct.
The cases were abandoned after Trump’s 2024 election win, but the debate over whether they were ever legitimate is far from settled. With future elections on the horizon, the question of how politics and prosecution intersect continues to divide voters.
