Anna Wolfe of Springfield, Missouri went to the hospital on August 19 with pain she thought was appendicitis or a kidney infection. Doctors had different news: she was 32 weeks pregnant and already in labor. Wolfe told them she wasn’t pregnant. Roughly two hours later, she gave birth to a daughter, Jade.
The condition is called a cryptic pregnancy, and an OB-GYN at Mercy Springfield described it as extremely rare. Wolfe said she had normal cycles and ordinary symptoms the entire time, which means there was nothing pointing her toward a pregnancy test. Jade weighed just over four pounds at birth and needed several weeks in the hospital to strengthen her lungs. She was finally discharged on September 21.
Wolfe has been open about how disorienting the experience was, saying it didn’t feel like the baby was real or even hers at first. That changed. She now says she’s fallen in love with the daughter she never knew was coming. It’s a reminder that pregnancy doesn’t always follow the script we expect, and that families can begin in the most unexpected ways.
